NOVEMBER, 2020:

COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of everyone in school communities.  Schools don’t have the same in-person contact with students they had in the past, so shoe needs are not as readily identified.  ShoeLady’s Holiday focus of the past is now too restrictive to reach as many children as could when schools functioned as they did pre-covid.

THEREFORE, SHOELADY IS BECOMING A YEAR-ROUND PROVIDER OF SHOES!  In response to feedback from school contacts we are reducing (not eliminating) our emphasis on Holiday deliveries, expanding our program to help children throughout the year.  Schools can request shoes as the needs arise, and ShoeLady will supply them on a regular schedule.

HOLIDAY DELIVERIES WILL STILL BE A PART OF OUR PROGRAM.  We invite you to pledge shoes or donate cash for specific Holiday needs.  But don’t stop there -

WE ALSO NEED SHOES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.  Send us new athletic shoes of any child’s size and for either gender and we will match them to requests as they come in.  Or, donate cash and we will buy shoes.  We budget $30 for each pair.

When a child came to play on a cold rainy day, barefoot and carrying his shoes, we had to know more.  Why would a 6-year old boy prefer walking barefooted over wet pavement and through mud and wet grass, to wearing his shoes?

It turned out that he did this regularly, because his only pair of shoes were cast-off women’s shoes that were too small and hurt his feet.  His parents could not afford to buy him replacements.

We wondered how many children in our community needed shoes, so we called 2 elementary schools and offered to ask people for donations if the schools would tell us the specifics – how many pairs of shoes were needed, and in what sizes.  We were not prepared for the response.

The number was huge.  From just TWO phone calls, we received EIGHTY FIVE SPECIFIC REQUESTS for shoes, for children whose parents could not afford to buy them.

That was what started ShoeLady.org, just before Christmas, 2013.

Since then ShoeLady.org has incorporated in the State of Virginia as ShoeLady.Org, Inc., and has received non-profit status with the IRS as a 501c(3) organization.

We have expanded our program to include twenty-six schools on the Peninsula, Gloucester, and Isle of Wight County in 2019; we expect to provide around 900 pairs of shoes this year.  We will not stop here.  Children everywhere need good shoes year-round.

We have a huge, local, immediate need.  Can you help us? Donate today!
